How to Install OTA Updates via ADB Sideload Or Recovery Mode (2019*)

In this tutorial, we are going to tell you how to apply updates from ADB sideload or Recovery mode. ADB is used for installing the zip files using a single command from your computer. We might have heard about TWRP recovery which also supports ADB sideload mode. coming to the importance of ADB sideload this is the best handy method for ROM developers.

Before we proceed into the actual procedure we wanted to let you know what basically is OTA

What Is OTA Update (Over-The-Air)

If you have an Android device, you must have heard about OTA. When there is an update available for your device people keep saying that you will receive the update via OTA. but what basically is OTA. OTA is known as Over the Air, which means you will receive the updates right to your device over the air, that is you get the update in your device and just need internet connectivity to download the update and install.

OTA update prevents the users to manually download the updates from the computer and install them. You directly receive the update in system updates and you are good to go and install the update you received.

OTA is basically a wireless transmission of the update to the users without the need of any other media. Whenever that Update is sent via OTA, the update is received by the user when the device is connected to the internet.

We here mentioned two methods for the installation of OTA update

  1. Apply updates from ADB sideload
  2. Install OTA updates using recovery mode.

Prerequisites

  1. You need to install TWRP recovery.
  2. The updated OTA zip file.
  3. Enable the developer options and also USB debugging on your android device from the settings.
  4. Your device must have free space to install the OTA
  5. ADB Fastboot tools installed on your computer.

Method 1: How To Apply Updates From ADB Sideload

  1. Get the OTA update zip file and copy it to your computer and rename the file to ota.zip
  2. Copy this ota.zip file to Minimal ADB and Fastboot tools folder “Platform-tools-latest-windows” folder
  3. using USB cable connect your device to the computer.
  4. Now in the ADB and Faastboot tools folder where you copied the zip file, and hold the shift button and press mouse right click. From the options select open command window here option.
  5. Use the  following command to reboot your device in recovery mode
    adb reboot recovery
  6. If your phone screen requests for Allow USB Debugging, click on yes.
  7. ur device is in recovery mode and in this mode use volume buttons o navigate up and down and power button to select the option.
  8. Using these buttons move to the option Apply update from ADB and select the option by pressing the power button for TWRP recovery go to Advance ->ADB Sideload.
  9. Use the following command to start the installation from ADB sideload
    adb sideload ota.zip
  10. Wait for the installation to complete and reboot the device.

Method 2: Install OTA Updates Using Recovery Mode

  1. Download the OTA update zip file and keep the file in the internal storage of your device.
  2. Now boot the device in recovery mode by simultaneously holding volume up and power button.
  3. In the recovery mode use volume buttons to navigate and power button to select the option.
  4. From the options that are available select apply update from phone storage for stock recovery and install zip for TWRP recovery
  5. Now it asks for the zip file, navigates the downloaded zip file and installs it.
  6. Wait for the installation to complete and reboot the device.
